Radix PANAX GINSENG (REN SHEN, English: Man Root) |
Considered to be the best herb to strongly tonify the Qi. Ginseng strongly tonifies the Lungs and Spleen as well as being a tonic to the rest of the five viscera (organs, including the Heart, Kidneys, and Liver). Modern Western research has shown it to affect the central nervous system through the hypothalamus-pituitary axis being both stimulating to the Heart, strengthening the contractions, as well as increasing the activity of RNA polymerase in the nucleus of Liver cells. This corresponds to the Chinese belief in that Ginseng is a tonic to the five viscera. People who take it notice increased energy and endurance, and the ability to handle stress better. Many different types of Ginseng are available: Kirin, Korean Red, Chang Bai Mountain, and American. Kirin, which is the least expensive and is used commercially in pills, capsules and extracts; Korean Red, which is soaked in an herb decoction containing Aconite, then steamed, is used as the hottest Ginseng; Chang Bai Mountain Ginseng, which is from the Chang Bai Mountains in Jilin province where the best Ginseng grows. In fact, it is also believed that Ginseng originated from this province. Virtually all the cultivated Ginseng that comes into this country is sprayed with a fungicide called quintozene. What makes this Ginseng special is that it has been tested for quintozene and was shown to be free of it. It was tested by several manufacturers on different occasions, and on each occasion was shown to be free of this fungicide. As far as is known about the Ginseng that is imported from China, very nearly all the Ginseng that comes from China is sprayed with this fungicide. (We are very privileged to offer this exquisite quintozene free for persons who have more cold signs in their constitution.) Red Ginseng is definitely contraindicated for those persons of a Yin deficient constitution with heat signs (thin body type, feels warm especially in the afternoon or evening, flushed face, nervous ungrounded energy, restlessness, etc.), heat excess, or without signs of Qi deficiency. The white ginseng is not as warming as the red and is more balanced in its energy. Ginseng is also contraindicated for high blood pressure with individuals with Liver Yang rising (systolic BP over 180 degrees). Drinking green or black tea, citrus, strong spices, eating radishes or turnips will tend to neutralize the effects of Ginseng. For persons of a Yin deficient constitution, Yin tonics are the method preferred and used to balance any Yin deficiencies. The type of Ginseng that is recommended for a person of that constitution is the American Ginseng, which is cooler in property in comparison to the Chinese, and will help to nourish the Yin (fluids). The American Ginseng that we carry is known to be pesticide free and is of the highest quality. Usage: 1-9 grams |

Considered to be one of the most important herbs for the Liver. For over 2000 years, the Chinese have been using this herb for Shao-Yang Syndromes. Shao-Yang means that the disease is half external - half internal, half acute - half chronic, half excess - half deficiency. Bupleurum is one of the chief herbs in the formula Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction), the major formula used to treat Shao-Yang diseases. These include diseases that linger, such as a lingering cold or flu. Oftentimes one will be given an antibiotic and the cold or flu will seem to be cured; however, the symptoms return and more antibiotics are given, thus enacting a vicious circle where the symptoms are never really gone. This formula is very specific for conditions such as these. Modern Western research shows that Bupleurum stimulates the secretion of bile from the Liver, lowers the SGOT and SGPT enzymes, and helps protect the Liver from toxins. In Chinese Medicine, Bupleurum is considered to be the most important herb for the Liver Shu-Xie function (pronounced Su-Shay). Shu-Xie in Chinese Medicine basically means "free-coursing/free-flowing" or the ability to do all the various functions assigned to the Liver in Chinese Medicine. Modern Western science says that the Liver performs or has over 500 functions. The Chinese believe that the Liver is in charge of the smooth movement of Qi (pronounced chi or ki - energy) and Blood in the body. If this flow of Qi and Blood is obstructed in any way it can give rise to symptoms such as depression, frustration, irritability, moodiness, anger, PMS, irregular or painful periods, hypochondriac pain, breast distention, headaches, dizziness, etc. Chinese diagnosis could be Liver Qi Stagnation or Constrained Liver Qi, Liver Qi Depression, Liver Yang Rising, Hyperactivity of the Liver, Liver Fire, Liver Shu-Xie dysfunction, etc. Bupleurum is a major ingredient in many different formulas including Da Chai Hu Tang (Major Bupleurum Decoction), Xiao Yao San (Free and Relaxed Wanderer Powder), and Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Supplement the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction). Another name this is known by is "Gold No Trade", for it was considered to be more valuable than gold to stop bleeding. It is considered to be one of the most important Chinese herbs used for trauma. One of the most well known patent prepared medicines is Yunnan Bai Yao. This formula's ingredients are touted as being secret, but the main ingredient is known to be Pseudoginseng. This was used in the Vietnam War for knife stabbings and gun shot wounds. It significantly shortens the coagulation time of wounds if applied directly to the wound. It is also used to promote the blood circulation in the body. One of the peculiarities of this herb is that not only can it stop bleeding without leaving scars, but it can dissolve blood clots in the veins as well. Modern research shows that it lowers cholesterol, dilates the coronary artery, and increases blood flow to the Heart. Our Pseudoginseng comes from the Yunnan province in China where the Yunnan Bai Yao formula originated and is considered to be of the highest quality. In addition, our Pseudoginseng contains no preservatives. It is a natural gold color, whereas many others are painted black with a preservative that looks like black shoe polish. The one on the right in the picture is what the one with the preservative looks like. We are very fortunate and privileged to provide this all-natural Pseudoginseng. Usage: 3-9 grams.
